Abstract

The article presents the influential figure of Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan, considered the father of modern librarianship in India. Known for formulating the "Five Laws of Library Science" and for developing the "Colon Classification", Ranganathan revolutionized the way libraries were organized and operated, emphasizing the usefulness of books for the reader and the active role of the librarian. He promoted open access to the shelves and founded essential institutions for the training of librarians. His theoretical and practical contributions had a significant impact globally, influencing the development of library science as a science.
